Andy
Goldsworthy creates sculptures made from found materials in natural
environments as seen in this work: Rowan
Leaves and Hole. This artwork references the theme of ‘Beyond’ through
material choice and composition as well as a conscious choice to preserve the
natural world. Firstly, the autumn leaves in this work displayed in a circle
indicate the continual cycle of life and decay that occurs in nature. Also, the
use of the black hole in the centre of this circle explores the theme of ‘Beyond’
through creating a window into the future. Andy Goldsworthy aims to move beyond
the superficiality of the materials and instead develop an understanding of the
processes which make up the environment. After creating his artworks, Andy Goldsworthy
leaves them to continue their natural processes including: growth, change,
decay, life and death. This work is situated both in the present and future environment
meaning Andy Goldsworthy intends them to be encountered later.
