Kaiser’s
work explores the idea that what lies in man’s future remains within our own
hands. In this artwork, four seeds were placed within petri dishes in
an ordered grid. Furthermore, each petri dish was labelled with a double sided
tag: one side with a word relating to a positive impact on the environment and
the other with a word describing a detrimental effect. These elements combine to create the
notion that mankind is in total control over our natural world. Also, the
choice of a white, clinical background emphasizes this idea as it represents
the potential for sterility that man creates. This installation is situated half
on concrete and half on grass - indicating two opposite but possible futures. Participants
are invited to use the watering cans placed around the edges of the work to pour
either water or oil onto the seeds. Therefore, You Decide focuses on the fragile future of the environment and
human’s ability and conscious choice to either nurture or destroy life.
