Jill Orr is a performance artist who uses her body to
explore ecological and social issues. In this work - Southern Cross - to bear and behold - Orr is shown walking across
the surface of Mitre Lake surrounded by flames. The close proximity between the
fragile lake and the fire shrouded figure represents humanities destructive
relationship with nature. Also, the dark footprints in the ice behind the
figure - those of Jill Orr herself - indicate the actions of people in the
past. In this case, these footprints display the detrimental actions we have
taken against the environment through the contrast between the dark tracks and
the unblemished white ice. The footprints still to be taken indicate that the
future of our world is still unwritten. Jill Orr’s artwork references the theme
of ‘Beyond’ through an exploration of the fate of the environment in the
future.
